Why the foundation of the Pilates method may be exactly what your body needs.
Reformer Pilates is having a huge moment, but it's worth remembering that before there was reformer, there was mat Pilates. In fact, mat work is the foundation of the entire Pilates method.
One of the things that often gets lost in the marketing is that Joseph Pilates developed a complete movement system he called Contrology - a method designed to create balanced development of the body, mind and spirit through conscious movement. While many people associate Pilates with the Reformer, mat work formed the foundation of the method. Joseph Pilates also developed apparatus such as the Reformer, Cadillac and Wunda Chair to complement the mat exercises, offering support, resistance and feedback. Yet many classical teachers, including Laura West our studios teacher, still consider the mat the ultimate expression of the practice: no springs, no straps and no moving carriage - just you, your body and gravity.
Very similar to the teachings of yoga where movement is a journey to the mind, Joseph Pilates believed: "Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness" and "It is the mind itself which builds the body."
His work wasn't about burning calories, sculpting abs or following trends. It was about moving better, breathing better and creating a body that could support you throughout life.
Why choose Mat Pilates?
1. It teaches you to use your own body
Without springs or moving platforms, you learn to create stability and control yourself.
This develops:
Core strength
Body awareness
Balance
Coordination
Postural strength
Functional movement patterns
Many Pilates teachers will tell you that mat work is actually harder than reformer because there is nowhere to hide.
2. It builds real-world strength
Your body doesn't move through life attached to springs.
Mat Pilates teaches you how to:
Stabilise your spine
Control your limbs
Transfer force efficiently
Move well in everyday life
This carries over beautifully into:
Walking
Gardening
Carrying shopping
Yoga
Running
Strength training
Healthy ageing
3. It is incredibly accessible
Once you know the movements, you can practise:
At home
On holiday
In a hotel room
In a park
Anywhere with enough room for a mat
You aren't dependent on a machine.
4. It develops body awareness
Many people come to Pilates expecting a workout and leave with something deeper.
Mat Pilates teaches you to:
Notice compensations
Feel imbalances
Improve breathing patterns
Understand how your body moves
This awareness often translates into reduced aches, better posture and greater confidence in movement.
5. It is excellent for longevity
Research consistently supports resistance exercise, balance training and movement quality as key factors in healthy ageing.
Mat Pilates helps develop:
Core strength
Mobility
Balance
Bone-supporting muscular strength
Fall prevention skills
Joint stability
These become increasingly valuable as we age.
What are the advantages of Reformer Pilates?
To be fair, reformers are wonderful too.
The machine can:
Provide support for beginners
Offer adjustable resistance
Help people recovering from injury
Create variety
Challenge strength in different ways
For some people, the reformer can feel more fun and motivating.
The downside of the reformer trend
Apart from being expensive, the downside isn't the reformer itself - it's the hype around it.
Many people are being sold reformer Pilates as if it is somehow "advanced Pilates" or "better Pilates."
It isn't.
It's simply one piece of the Pilates system.
A strong mat Pilates practice can be every bit as challenging, effective and transformative as reformer work.
A Small Change at Yogi Sanctuary
As we've reflected on the roots of the Pilates method and the purpose behind the practice, we've realised that our class name should reflect what we're actually teaching.
For that reason, Burn will now become simply Mat Pilates.
While the previous name captured the strength and challenge of the class, it didn't fully represent what Pilates is really about. Mat Pilates isn't just about feeling the burn. It's about building strength with control, improving posture, developing body awareness, supporting joint health and creating movement habits that serve you for life.
The new name honours both the origins of the method and the experience we hope to offer: thoughtful movement, mindful breathing and sustainable strength.
Sometimes the original really is the classic for a reason.
Before Pilates became a trend, it was a practice. No machines. No flashing lights. No waiting lists. Just thoughtful movement, mindful breathing and learning how to move your body well.
Mat Pilates remains one of the most effective ways to build strength, improve posture, support your joints and feel at home in your body.
At Yogi Sanctuary, our Mat Pilates class stays true to these principles. Like yoga, it combines mindful movement, breath awareness and intelligent strength training to create a body that is not only stronger, but more resilient, balanced and capable for everyday life.
So rather than chasing the latest fitness trend, perhaps the real question is not whether you should choose mat or reformer Pilates, but whether you are building a practice that will support you for years to come.
