I am better than that ……

I say I don’t want data centres filling our fields, being built next to our homes. So I sign the petitions.

I say I want to protect the bees, preserve our water and stop the drive towards the end of humanity. So I sign the petition and share the posts.

But what can I do about it really? It’s a train that’s left the station. I’m just one voice. It’s inevitable.

Yet I pay to fill the ‘cloud’ with back ups of old photos of my food and multiple versions of the same yoga pose. Even though the ‘cloud’ is a building next to someone’s house pumping out that god awful noise and sucking up their water.

I look at posts of friends who have used AI to show us what they didn’t look like in the 80’s. And I say nothing.

And my husbands company stores documents on a server in a data centre for 20 years that no one will ever look at again. But that’s the law apparently. And I say nothing.

I have a folder on Instagram (ie a data centre) full of recipes I’ll never make, while books rest unopened on my shelves.

I don’t use AI to write my classes or my posts as I value protecting my words, my intelligence and my creativity. But I use Canva for my posters and to put fancy text on my social media images. And have since found out they use AI.

How can I be a yoga teacher and yet not practice the Yamas ?

- Ahimsa : non harm to others and the world around us.

- Satya : truthfulness and integrity

- Asteya : non stealing

So I’m setting aside time to delete unnecessary photos and find out how to back up my iphone locally and not in the cloud. As it’s not just AI that is stealing our resources in these data centres.

I’ll research what software I can use that is on my laptop instead of Canva (anyone got any advice on what to use? I used PowerPoint before but would love to look at something more suitable)

I’ll have a clean up of what I save on social media and write out the recipes I will actually use.

Will it make any difference?

Surely it’s just a drop in the ocean.

But maybe it will inspire someone else reading this to do the same. And then thats two ‘drops in the ocean’.

And besides how can I live with myself if I do nothing when I know the child I lovingly brought up is growing up into a world I’m helping to destroy?

I’m better than that - I will do better than that!
